Book a hazard perception test (HPT)

You must pass the HPT before taking the provisional P1 licence driving test.

Introduction

To get your provisional P1 driver licence, you need to:

1. Successfully complete the Hazard Perception Test (HPT).
2. Pass a practical driving test.

The HPT is a computer-based test. During the HPT, you use the computer’s touchscreen to show how you respond to real traffic situations, such as if and when you would slow down, overtake, or turn.

You cannot sit your practical driving test until you've successfully completed your HPT.

HPT tests are taken at a Service NSW Centre. A fee is attached, and each time you book a HPT, you have to pay the fee.

Eligibility

To take the HPT you must hold a current NSW learner driver licence.

• If you're under the age of 25, you must have held your learner driver licence for at least 10 months.
• If you're aged 25 or over, you can take the HPT when you feel ready.

What you need

• your NSW driver licence number, Photo Card number, or Transport for NSW customer number
• an account with Online Services (optional)
• the PDF form – Licence Application
• your payment.

Note: When you visit a service centre to take the HPT, you'll need to prove your identity.

How to book

1. Check the eligibility requirements .
2. Gather your supporting documents.
3. Select the 'Book online' button.
4. Enter the required details as:
   • an existing RMS/TfNSW customer , or
   • an Online Services account holder.
5. Follow the prompts to book a HPT.

More information

• If you successfully complete your HPT, your result is valid for 15 months.
• Once you've passed the HPT, you need to pass the driving test within 15 months. If you don't, you'll need to sit the HPT again.
• The HPT is available in several languages.
• There is a free interpreter service available on 13 22 13.
